Steuben legislators look at 911 revenues and landfill transfer

BATH – Additional revenues for 911 services in Steuben and other counties, and plans for the fourth cell at the Steuben County landfill top the agenda for county legislators when they meet at 10 a.m. Monday at the County Office Building, 1 E. Pulteney Square Steuben lawmakers will be asked to give preliminary endorsement to a local law allowing the 30-cent wireless surcharge to include prepaid cell phones and added to 911 centers’ revenues. While the state now collects the surcharges on prepaid cell phones, new state legislation calls for a portion of the surcharge to be given to counties for use in their 911 operations. If endorsed by Steuben legislators Monday, the law would be subject to a public hearing and final approval by the county Legislature when it meets in August. If passed, the law would take effect Dec. 1. County legislators also will be asked to authorize the transfer of the remaining funds from the landfill’s Cell 3 to a capital project set up to pay for a new landfill project. The approval would transfer 1,472,538 still available for use by the county Solid Waste Division and allow plans for Cell 4 to move forward.
  • • Authorizing the Steuben Commissioner of Finance to add five projects to the county Public Works Department’s Capital Construction Account.
  • • Authorizing the Steuben Law Department to enter a contract and provide legal services to the Steuben County Land Bank.
  • • Appointing members to the Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Directors.
