Nunda woman arrested following welfare fraud investigation

NUNDA/MOUNT MORRIS: Livingston County Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of a Nunda woman on felony level charges after a welfare fraud investigation. Amber L. Garwood, age 25 from Nunda, was charged with the felonies of Grand Larceny in the 3rd degree, Welfare Fraud in the 3rd degree, and Misuse of Food Stamps, as a result of the investigation.

It is alleged that Garwood obtained public assistance through the Livingston County Department of Social Services and failed to report income she was receiving from a job that she held.  Based on the failure to report her income, Garwood was granted public assistance that she would not have been eligible for.  The total amount that Garwood fraudulently obtained was $3,368.

Garwood was turned over to Central Booking Deputies at the Livingston County Jail for processing and held on pre-arraignment detention. The District Attorney's Office recommended Garwood's bail be set at $1,000 cash or $2,000 bond. Garwood was arraigned before Justice Houston in the Town of Geneseo Court.  The Judge remanded Garwood to the custody of the Sheriff on the recommended bail.  Handling the investigation for the Sheriff's Office was Investigator Bradley Schneider of the Criminal Investigations Division.  The investigation was collaborative effort of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the Livingston County Department of Social Services and the Livingston County District Attorney's Office.
