The Big Brothers, Big Sisters Programs Receive ACAF Grant Money

(L to R):  Angela Button (Big Brothers, Big Sisters Program Coordinator), Leslie Haggstrom (ACAF Board Member) and Erica Grantier (Big Brothers, Big Sisters Program Site Coordinator).
The Allegany County Area Foundation (ACAF) recently presented two $350 checks to fund a Big Brothers, Big Sisters project at both the Genesee Valley Central School and the Whitesville Central School. This money comes from the Allegany Endowment Fund at the Foundation.  Harmony Ayers-Friendlander, Executive Director of the Family Service Society, stated, “The Big Brothers, Big Sisters programs at the Genesee Valley and Whitesville locations are both positively impacting the lives of at-risk children by providing them with a caring mentor, extra-curricular education, life-skills, and confidence – enabling them to succeed in school and life.”At the Genesee Valley Big Brothers, Big Sisters program the ACAF grant money will be used to fund an Extracurricular Art Enrichment initiative which will include four hands-on pottery classes taught by a local art teacher.  The students will learn about techniques in sculpting, coil pots, carving, stamping, attaching appendages with slip and glazing. All of the projects will be kiln-fired, and the children and teens will be able to keep their creations after the four classes are complete. At the Whitesville Big Brothers, Big Sisters program the ACAF grant money will be used to help fund an educational trip to the World War II Museum in Eldred, PA, an opportunity they would otherwise might not get to experience.  The tour of the museum will include huge model displays, thousands of artifacts to study, and mock battles the students will be able to command on the large simulation table.  After the tour the students will participate in a scavenger hunt to locate items that they learned about on their tour.

The Big Brothers, Big Sisters Programs also complete several community service projects each year, improving their communities and teaching the children the importance of giving back.
