Livingston County: After 38 years, police still search for the killer of Tammy Jo Alexander

LIVINGSTON COUNTY: Today, November 10, 2017, marks the 38th anniversary of the tragic death of Tammy Jo Alexander. For 35 years she was known only as "Jane Doe" until the Livingston County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the Hernando County Sheriff's Office in Florida and the FBI, was able to give her, and her family, her name back. In the brisk, early morning hours of November 10th, 1979, a local farmer and his son were checking their fields off Route 20 in the rural Town of Caledonia, NY, when they discovered the lifeless body of an unidentified young girl. She had been shot and left to die just off the highway in a cold, desolate cornfield.
This case would become a leading news topic for years. Thousands upon thousands of leads have been developed over the past thirty eight years, but it wasn't until 2014 that the necessary lead came in that would give her name back. After months of investigating that particular tip, Caledonia Jane Doe from 1979 was positively identified as Tammy Jo Alexander in early 2015. Although thousands of leads have been received over the years, none have led to the identification of her killer(s).
Tammy Jo Alexander, originally from Brooksville Florida, was only 16 years old at the time of her death. Tammy Jo was born on November 2, 1963 and attended school at Hernando High School and South Sumter high School in Florida.
The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office has not, and never will, give up hope that the killer will be identified and brought to justice.
The Livingston County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the FBI and Law Enforcement across the country, continues to investigate the murder of Tammy Jo Alexander.
The Sheriff's Office asks for the community’s assistance in identifying Tammy Jo Alexander's killer. If you have any information regarding the death of Tammy Jo Alexander you are asked to contact the Livingston County Sheriff's Office at 585-243-7100 or 1-844-LCSO-TIP. A tip can also be made through our website at http://ift.tt/2mfp22w under the "take action-tip line."
"We will always fight for justice for this little girl," stated Sheriff Dougherty. "We continue to ask folks from across the nation to please help in our quest to hold Tammy Jo's killer accountable. Even if you think your tip is minute, please call us with that information; it may be exactly the piece of the puzzle we are missing."
