Wellsville man heads to jail for aiming a gun at a cop - Chief says suspect could have been fatally shot
A Wellsville man pleaded guilty to felony crimes in two separate cases Wednesday. The result, 20-year-old Maverick A. Glover of 86 East Hanover Street is going to spend Christmas and other holiday's in jail.The first case occurred in Alma in February when Glover broke into a home a stole weapons and a truck. The second case happened in April in the village of Wellsville. Glover was found to be in possession of a stolen Honda dirt bike and when Wellsville police attempted to arrest him...he pulled a gun and aimed it at the cops.
In Allegany County Wednesday, Glover was sentenced to his convictions on the felony crimes of grand larceny and attempted menacing of a police officer.
Judge Thomas Brown sentenced Glover to one year in the county jail, four years probation and of course, the $325 court surcharge. Assistant District Attorney Mike Finn prosecuted the case.
Wellsville Police Chief Timothy O'Grady said this morning he wasn't sure the sentence "acted as a deterrent." O'Grady said the subsequent investigation revealed Glover was actually using a realistic looking gun that was a BB gun. The Chief said his officers would have been justified in utilizing lethal force. O'Grady said regarding Glover's actions..."it was fortunate for him" that officers exercised restraint.
