Allegany County: Law Day essay winners
On May 1, 2018 the Allegany County Bar Association held a Law Day Event at the Courthouse in Belmont, NY. The event recognized the winners in the Bar Association Law Day Essay Contest.
The contest was open to area high school students who submitted essays on the theme of separation of powers. The students were asked to write an essay explaining the theory and process of checks and balances, and to illustrate the concept with modern day examples.
The essays were judged anonymously by some of the officers of the Allegany County Bar Association.
The first place winner was Alannah Allen. Alannah is a junior at Scio Central School. Barbara Kelley, president of the Allegany County Bar Association, presented Ms. Allen with a $300 check and a first place certificate.
Sage Printup, a senior at Scio Central School, received $200 and a certificate for the second place essay.
Ms. Allen is the daughter of Shawn and Christie Allen. She is a three-sport athlete who plays soccer, basketball and softball and is active in several school clubs. She has two sisters and the family hosts two foreign exchange students.
Ms. Printup is the daughter of Grace and Scott Printup. She also has two siblings and is involved in several clubs and organizations at Scio Central School. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, STEM Club and Writer’s Club. She plans to attend the University of Buffalo to study Biological Sciences, with the eventual goal of becoming a dermatologist.
