After a largely enjoyable three plus year run, Wellsville Regional News is immediately ending its news service to several radio stations in the Olean, NY and Bradford, PA markets. On May 1, 2018 the stations once owned by Colonial Media and Entertainment were sold to a Scranton, PA firm. While negotiations have continued during the past thirty-one days, it's time to abruptly throw in the towel and retreat. Having been in the broadcast news business for 38 years, my patience has grown thin. Each and every day, beginning at 1:20 a.m., I meet the deadlines with award-winning news content (recipient of New York and Pennsylvania Broadcaster Association "Best Local News.") The hidden story is - payday is payday...not "on or about." If I were to be late in supplying news, i.e., miss a deadline, there would be Hell to pay. I'm not sure why corporate and wealthy bosses feel it is okay for 'payday' to be considered as a casual event. Tower Broadcasting, which owns radio stations in Bath and for which I provide service, pays in advance and on time, every time. I am grateful for that. During the past three years, I have enjoyed conversations (on and off the record) with the Cattaraugus County DA, Olean mayor and school officials, the Bradford police chief, Congressman Glenn "GT" Thompson and more. I hope these stations grab a new source for news and that they thrive...it just won't be with me.
That being said, make no mistake that Wellsville Regional News (online) will continue to grow and report. Contracts remain intact for services provided to radio stations in Bath, NY, (Fort) Bragg radio, Fayetteville, NC and the Grand Strand in South Carolina. When I was 28, I think I allowed corporate bosses to walk over me...decades later, I've learned...I have value.
