HOUGHTON, NY – Houghton College is pleased to welcome Dr. Amos Yong, director of the Center for Missiological Research at Fuller Theological Seminary, to campus as part of the 2018-2019 Woolsey Lecture Series.
Dr. Yong’s November 1 talk, “Multiculturalism: Postures and Practices for Christians in the 21st-Century American Polis,” will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Center for the Arts. He will also discuss “The Work of the Mind and Life in the Spirit” on Friday, November 2 at 11:00 a.m. in Wesley Chapel. Both events are free and open to the public.
During a time when American society seems more divided than ever over national identity in a time of changing demographics, Yong offers a theological analysis using the experiences of first-century Messianic believers. He draws on New Testament writings that suggest a form of “apostolic multiculturalism,” a template for attitudes and practices for witness and engagement across cultural lines.
Yong, who is also a professor of theology and mission at Fuller, interacts regularly with both traditional theological approaches and contemporary contextual theologies, addressing themes such as political theology, hospitality, disability, interfaith dialogue, and the mission of God. He has authored 200 scholarly articles and authored or edited nearly four dozen volumes and books.
Yong holds a bachelor’s degree from Bethany College, master’s degrees from Western Evangelical Seminary and Portland State University, and a doctorate from Boston University.
Each fall semester, the Woolsey Lecture Series in Theology and Culture provides insights from respected speakers in order to encourage spiritual and intellectual growth. The series is funded by the Margaret Hayes Randall Endowment and the friends of Houghton College.
