Farm-to-School grants benefit Wellsville, Genesee-Valley
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced Wednesday $1.5 million in awards to support Farm-to-School programs across New York. The funding has been awarded to 18 projects and educational organizations that serve students in Kindergarten through Grade 12, and will benefit over 420,000 students. Funding for the Farm-to-School program was doubled in the State's 2018-19 Budget and is a key component of the Governor's No Student Goes Hungry initiative. In Allegany County, two school districts will receive funding:
Wellsville Central SD will purchase an outdoor freezer to store local food and to support collaborative meal planning and coordinated crop planting with local farmers.
Funding will be used to improve the capacity of food service teams to procure, process, preserve and serve fresh, locally grown produce within their district and increase consumption through creative marketing, field experiences and interactive food displays, giving more than 600 students access to nearly 8,000 pounds of locally-procured food.
