Livingston County Sheriff "surpised" at lack of media, public reaction to bail reform
Livingston County Sheriff Thomas Dougherty took to Twitter Monday night to express his surprise at the lack of public reaction after the newly adopted state budget removes a bail requirement for most people arrested.He said in his Tweets:
#1- "I am surprised that the Bail Reform bill in NYS budget didn’t get more attention from media & public. Just to give you a small indication of it, burglary 2 (c felony) & robbery 2 (c felony) don’t qualify as offenses that a judge can hold a person on bail for & they must release..."
#2 - "Also a person accused of and arrested for dealing heroin would typically be charged by Law Enforcement with Criminal Sale of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd Degree (B felony), this also would not “qualify” for a judge to hold the person on bail and they must be released per the bill."
