Rep. Reed stands with survivors of domestic violence

PRESS RELEASE:

WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Tom Reed stood with survivors of domestic abuse, voting in support of the Violence Against Women’s Reauthorization Act of 2019 (VAWA).
“We care about protecting every woman in America from domestic violence in all its forms,” said Tom. “We can help to prevent domestic abuse if we provide women and law enforcement the tools that they need to prevent these horrible acts of violence.”
“It shouldn’t be about politics – it’s about doing what is right and being compassionate,” Tom added.
“We applaud Congressman Reed’s “YES” vote to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act of 2019,” said Jacqueline Phelps, Executive Director, YWCA of Jamestown. “Our organization works with victims of domestic violence and sexual violence every day in several of our programs.  The passage of this bill truly shows Congressman Reed supports those who suffer from these terrifying crimes and will support efforts to help those in their most critical time of need.  We thank Congressman Reed for his vote and today’s passage to reauthorize VAWA for the safety and health of our community.”
In addition to reauthorizing important grant programs that prevent domestic violence, enhance police department collaboration to respond to the needs of victims, and fund research into preventing domestic violence, VAWA also:
  • Reauthorizes the Office of Violence Against Women within the DOJ. The Office of Violence Against Women administers the majority of grants  within VAWA. Grants such as:
    • STOP Violence Against Women Grant Program
    • Sexual Assault Services Grant Program
    • State and Territorial Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Coalitions Program
    • Tribal Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Grant Program
  • Reauthorizes funding to housing protections for victims/survivors of domestic violence
It was first signed into law in 1994 and was previously reauthorized in 2000, 2005 and 2013.
