Hamilton Hill Extension-Baker's Bridge Completed, Alfred Station
New York State Department of Transportation Acting Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez today announced that construction has been completed on a $2 million project to replace the bridge carrying Hamilton Hill Extension, also known as State Route 961G, over Canacadea Creek in the Town of Alfred. The new bridge enhances safety and restores an important travel link for people and commerce in the hamlet of Alfred Station. It is also commonly used by students traveling to and from nearby Alfred University and Alfred State College.
“New York State is committed to building a 21st Century infrastructure that improves quality of life and helps our communities grow,” Acting Commissioner Dominguez said. “This new bridge over the Canacadea Creek will ease travel for residents and visitors, facilitate commerce and enhance safety for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians alike.”
Locally known as Baker’s Bridge after the original pole bridge constructed over the Canacadea Creek in 1809 by Thaddeus and Alpheus Baker, the new bridge replaces a structure that was built in 1936. The new bridge, which features a new sidewalk for pedestrians and four-foot-wide shoulders to accommodate bicyclists, was constructed with steel reinforced concrete abutments and wingwalls that support precast concrete beams and a concrete deck. A decorative bridge railing complements the overall design.
