Darlene Boyce Wells and Her Donated Quilt
This year marks the 15th year in which Darlene Boyce Wells has contributed a hand-embroidered, quilted wall hanging to the Catherine Schuyler Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). These quilts are given in loving memory of her mother, Gwynetta Morse Boyce, who passed away just months after 90th birthday in 2004.
“Voices”, tickets for this quilt, are being made available at various locations and events in Allegany County and by Catherine Schuyler Chapter members from October 17, 2019, until May 21, 2020, the date of the drawing. The proceeds will be used to support the DAR Mission of Education, in honor of Gwynetta Boyce who began her career as a school teacher in 1935 in a one-room school house in Norwalk, Ohio
Mrs. Boyce, wife of Donald Boyce, taught in the Andover and Wellsville school districts starting in the 1950s. Both of Donald and Gwynetta Boyce’s children, Daron and Darlene, were graduates of Wellsville High School, in 1960 and 1965, respectively.
In her later years Mrs. Boyce resided in Ontario County, but remained a member of the local DAR chapter, where she had served in several capacities during her 20-year membership. She was a Vice Regent from 1986-1989; Librarian, DAR Scholarship Committee Chairman and member of the Ways and Means Committee from 1989 to 1992 and was Director of Auditing and Finance in subsequent years.
It is an honor for the Catherine Schuyler DAR Chapter to be a part of Darlene Boyce Well’s annual remembrance of and tribute to her mother. The chapter is grateful for the opportunity to serve and honor, in turn, young people of the Allegany County community using the proceeds from her beautifully embroidered quilts.
Darlene Boyce Wells has also donated books of her mother’s poetry, photos, news articles and an extensive family history, recording her mother’s ancestry and deep Mennonite and Amish roots in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Treasured items all.
