Wellsville: Arched bridge on Madison Street could be replaced in 2022
Plans are underway to replace the arched bridge that takes Madison Street over the railroad tracks in the village of Wellsville. Currently, the expected replacement is scheduled for 2022. The total cost right now is set at $2.57 million. State and federal resources will pick up 80% or more of the cost. Justin Henry is the Superintendent of the Allegany County Department of Public Works, which is overseeing the project. He said today it is an unusual project, in some respects, because the bridge is owned by the Village of Wellsville. Henry said it is only one of two bridges owned by a village. The other is in Cuba. Most bridges in New York State are controlled by towns, counties or the state and federal government. Henry called it a "complex" project, noting the proximity of buildings, rights of way and the railroad. He called the project "unique." Bids, right now, will happen in late 2021. The state and federal government will cover 80% of the cost, of not more. Henry said there has been an excellent arrangement between the county, village and town to pay for the balance. When construction begins, there will be a significant traffic diversion in Wellsville.
