In 1889 Belfast became known in the sports world as the training camp of Champion Bare Knuckle Boxer John L. Sullivan, but it was because it was the hometown and training quarters of health enthusiast and Champion Roman-Greco Wrestler William Muldoon. Muldoon was a man of his time – when a health movement across the country praised the benefits of healthy living and healthy eating. His health farm in White Plains attracted the rich and famous.
This past weekend, Traci Muldoon, traveled from California to Belfast to learn about her family’s history and learned how her great, great, great uncle impacted not only the health world, but also the history of boxing and wrestling and life in the small town of Belfast.
Scott Burt, the founder of the Bare Knuckle Boxing Hall of Fame located in Belfast was one of about two dozen people who revealed Muldoon’s impact to his town and history when fifth cousins Traci Muldoon and Anne Rizo visited.
