Municipal Building: Wellsville Mayor says "vetting new owner #1 concern"

Wellsville Mayor Randy Shayler
When February 2020 rolls around, the once hectic and historic Municipal Building on North Main Street in Wellsville will sit empty. Last week, the village offices moved to 23 North Main Street and Wednesday night the town board said it was leaving to temporarily relocate to the town-owned Wellsville Municipal Airport. Village Mayor Randy Shayler said this morning that his "number one concern is vetting any potential buyer" for the village-owned building. Shayler said any future owner needed to "keep the image" and respect the significance of the building. "We must be 100%," he said.

With the town offices pulling out, the village will lose $1,000 a month in revenue it obtained from town rent. Shayler said "there will be no impact on village finances." He noted the village's fiscal year ends May 31st. "It's not a negative," he said.
The town board Wednesday night also announced it had reached a deal with the Educational Foundation of Alfred and the Alfred State School of Applied Technology in Wellsville. The town will 'gift' 14 acres of land it owns off Proctor Road to the Foundation and in exchange, the college will build the town a new highway building and town offices on West Hanover Street. Shayler said "that makes good sense." Town Supervisor Shad Alsworth also indicated Wednesday night that the town may investigate having the village annex the Proctor Road land. When the college eventually begins to build houses on the site, village services could be enticing for a potential homeowner. When Shayler was asked if he would support the potential annexation, he replied "absolutely." He said he understood the benefit to the Foundation, college and village.
