At its regular meeting Monday, the Wellsville Village Board presented the Salvation Army with a bigger gift than thought.
Salvation Army Capt. Derrick Purvis said he was surprised when Village Mayor Randy Shayler presented him with a check for $2,800 from the proceeds deposited in parking meters in December.
For the last several years the village has decreed that parking in the village is free during December. As in the past, this year notices were placed on the meters telling parkers that parking is free, but that if they want to deposit some coin it will go to a local charity.
Board members then decide what charity will receive the funds, Shayler said at the meeting.
Afterwards, Purvis said he was surprised at the amount. “I was told it would be around $2,000 but this is much more than that,” he said.
The $2,800 will be used locally to help fund the Salvation Army’s many programs for youth, teens and adults as well as the food pantry.
At a special recognition dinner Saturday, the Salvation Army will honor those volunteers who helped them reach their $30,000 goal for this year’s Red Kettle drive.
