Wellsville High School senior Sarah Carlton is the winner of the Catharine Schuyler Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution 2020 Good Citizens Award and Scholarship Contest.
Established in 1934, the Good Citizens Award and Scholarship contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools, and communities. These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree.
The subject of the 2020 essay was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It.” They were additionally asked, “You and your peers are our leaders of tomorrow. How would you energize America’s youth to fully engage as effective citizens? Why is that important?
Across the county the students selected by their school districts this year, to receive the initial award are: Isaac Little - Alfred-Almond; Rachel Marsh - Belfast; Kaylee Middaugh - Bolivar-Richburg; Kyle Wittenrich - Cuba-Rushford; Patrick DiRienzo – Fillmore; Charis Devlin Ruxton – Friendship; Alexis Deichmann - Genesee Valley; Katelyn Barney -Whitesville and Carlton.
Carlton was the Catherine Schuyler Chapter winner. She also won first place at District VIII level. She than competed at the state level.
The daughter of Dena Hess and Dana Carlton, Sarah is 18 and in the fall she plans on attending the Word of Life Bible Institute in Potterville, NY where she will study counseling and psychology. For the past two years she has worked at Wellsville McDonald’s.
