Local news matters. I literally recite those words every morning. Since 1981, I have spent a portion of my life reporting local and regional news. I wasn’t the best and I wasn’t the worst. I did shine during the Low Level Radioactive Waste Site saga in Allegany County in the 1980’s. Quite by accident, literally, I broke the story that multiple sites in Allegany County could be home to a waste dump. I became a “go-to” person for the Associated Press and the Buffalo TV market. News, then, was obtained by hard work, repetitive calls and an agreement with the All Mighty that you will NOT accept NO for an answer. Fast forward to 2020 – Police, local governments and other agencies, just toss a ‘press release’ on Facebook. They don’t take calls and simply say, ‘read our Facebook page.’ Well, I read your FB page…and I have questions! To any young person interested in journalism…don’t be fooled by the 2020 media. It’s okay to ask a question. It’s okay to push. It’s, simply, okay to do your job. 

I see the finish line in my career, but many have just experienced the green flag. Ask the questions.
