Police reform plan in Steuben expected to become law Monday

BATH -- Police reform and funding for a bridge replacement in the Town of Erwin top the agenda for Steuben County legislators when they meet at 10 am Monday in their chambers in the county Annex at 20 W. Morris.

In a joint effort started last August, and in concert with Corning, Inc, law enforcement agencies took a hard look at their policies and practices, inviting input from other key agencies and stakeholders, and the public.

The final draft set out a broad range of uniform best practices for law enforcement officers with several already in place, and others set in motion to be put in place in 2021. The finished draft drew the praise of state and county leaders and was unanimously approved by the county board when it was presented in December.

The formal police reform law is expected to enacted by Steuben lawmakers Monday.

The county board also is expected to approve $4.2 million in BridgeNY funding to pay to replace the County Road 115 bridge crossing the Canisteo River in the Town of Erwin. The approval will allow the county Public Works Department to begin the initial construction phase, which includes design, right of way and support.

In accepting the BridgeNY funds, the county will agree to pay any costs exceeding $4.2 million. Construction is expected to begin within two years.
