This commentary has been posted many times before, but it warrants a repeat (despite the heat it develops). Kudos to Allegany and Steuben County governments (and others). For years, these governments have posted online and made available to the media their meeting agenda's. Why? They want the public to know what they plan to act on. Why? If there is a concern on an issue, maybe...just maybe, a concerned citizen will either reach out or call to ask a question. My job isn't just to report what happened, but rather, what may be considered...you know, so that you...that public could participate. Many smaller towns, villages and school districts comply. They welcome the public. Others...I'm not sure if they care if you show up. The Wellsville Village Board meets this evening at 6 p.m. I just checked their website...no agenda. People are busy and they have to prioritize. They can't make those decisions without information. People need more than 30 minutes notice. If rural Allegany County government can...if rural Wellsville school district can...then clearly, other elected bodies can tell the public what they plan to discuss in an open meeting. I could be wrong. Maybe nobody cares. If that's true, well...read about the decisions and bitch, with no voice. Local governments-tell the public what you plan to do. It isn't that difficult.
