Wind storm leaves thousands without power in Steuben County
BATH -- The Steuben County Office of Emergency Services(OES) urges residents to use extreme caution in the wake of the windstorm that at one point left almost 17,500 electrical customers in more than 50,000 households and businesses without power Friday morning. As of 8 a.m. Friday, power has been restored to approximately 2,000 customers. Power outages reported by New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) centered in central Steuben, including the towns of Bath, Urbana, Pulteney, Cohocton, Hammondsport, Savona, Bradford and Wheeler. Other significant outages were reported by NYSEG in the towns and villages of Addison, Jasper, Prattsburgh, Rathbone, Troupsburg and Woodhull, where more than half of all customers reported a loss of power.
The outage also affected Bath Electric Gas and Water Systems and the Steuben Rural Electric Co-Op.
The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a wind advisory until 6 p.m. Friday, with winds of 20-30 mph reaching gusts up to 50 mph. "Travelers are urged to use to every precaution on the roads during this storm," said county OES Director Tim Marshall. "The potential for fallen trees, limbs and loose objects, and downed power lines presents a real driving hazard. Rain water has pooled on road surfaces, especially where leaves have clogged storm drains. Take your time and be safe." "Please leave those lines open for emergencies."
