Wellsville, and every other local government with a police force, is getting busy developing plans for reform. It’s a demand from state government, which threatens to withhold funding for those that don’t participate. During an interview this week, Wellsville mayor Randy Shayler had a ringing endorsement of the Wellsville Police Department. "The Board and I have a ton of faith in Chief O'Grady and the excellent police force we have in place now. But, at the same time, we all realize, as they do, that you're always open for suggestions for improvement," Shayler said.
The plan must be completed by next April. It must also, within 150 days, involve the union for input.
